A Journey of Renewal

The story of Downtown Evanston's renaissance dates back to the early 1980s when a passionate group of citizens voiced their concerns about the neglected state of the district. The city authorities faced a crucial decision - to create a Downtown Development Authority or an Urban Renewal Agency. Opting for the latter, the Evanston Urban Renewal Agency (EURA) was born, marking the beginning of a transformative journey.

Preservation and Aesthetic Enhancements

The preservation and design projects carried out by EURA breathed new life into Evanston Main Street and the Historic districts. One of the significant achievements was the restoration of Depot Square, a three-block area donated by Union Pacific Railroad in 1987. Today, it stands as a testament to the power of preservation, featuring a fully restored train depot, a replica of the original Chinese Joss House, heritage and Chinese gazebos, the renovated barn Beeman-Cashin building, the Carnegie Library housing the Chamber of Commerce and Uinta County Museum, and more. Depot Square has become a cherished gathering place for the community.

Transforming into an Inviting Destination

Beyond preservation, Evanston's downtown underwent an aesthetic metamorphosis. The installation of Sternberg lights, street signs, benches, and an array of beautiful trees and flowers transformed the area into an inviting and visually appealing destination. These changes brought new service and retail shops, thriving restaurants and bars, and businesses with upgraded facades, all contributing to the vibrancy of Downtown Evanston.

Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future

Preservation efforts extended to the 27-acre Historic Roundhouse & Railyards complex, a living testament to Evanston's rich railroad heritage. The fully restored Machine Shop, (Patterson) visitor center, operable turntable, and partially renovated 4-section Roundhouse provide a glimpse into the city's storied past. Today, these restored buildings host myriad events, from weddings and festivals to fundraisers and conferences.
